LoveCrafts
  1. Crown
  2. Granny Stitch Body
  3. Brim

Choosing the Sun Hat Pattern Correct Crown Size

Before starting, measure the circumference of your head around the forehead and just above the ears.

Divide this measurement by 3.14.
The result is the approximate diameter your crochet crown should reach before you stop increasing.

Example

Head Circumference:

  • 56 cm (22 inches)

Calculation:

56 Γ· 3.14 = 17.8 cm

Continue increasing until the crown measures approximately 18 cm across.

Part 2 – Granny Stitch Hat Body

This section creates the sides of the hat without adding any more increases.

Alternate the following two rounds until the hat reaches the top of your ears.

Granny Round A

  • Ch 2 (counts as first Dc).
  • Work 2 Dc in the same stitch.
  • Skip the next 2 stitches.
  • Work 3 Dc into the next stitch.

Repeat:

  • Skip 2 stitches.
  • 3 Dc in the next stitch.

Granny Round B

  • Work 3 Dc into each gap between the granny clusters (the space created by the 2 skipped stitches in the previous round).
  • At the end of the round, complete the final cluster beside the starting chain.
  • Join with Sl St.

Repeat Round A and Round B until the desired height is reached.

Foundation Round for the Brim

Ch 1.

Work 1 Front Post Single Crochet (FPsc) around the post of every double crochet from the last granny round.

Do not increase on this round – your stitch count must remain exactly the same as before.

Part 3 – Crochet Brim

The brim gradually widens with evenly spaced increases.

Round 1

Repeat:

  • 4 Sc
  • Increase

Join with a Sl St at the end of this round.

Rounds 2–3

From now on, work in a continuous spiral without joining.

Sc in every stitch around.

Place a stitch marker in the first stitch of the round and move it up as you work.

Round 4

Repeat:

  • Increase
  • 5 Sc

Round 5

Sc around.

Round 6

Repeat:

  • 6 Sc
  • Increase

Rounds 7–8

Sc around.

Round 9

Repeat:

  • Increase
  • 7 Sc

Rounds 10–13

Sc around.

Round 14

Repeat:

  • 8 Sc
  • Increase

Rounds 15–19

Sc in every stitch.

At the end of Round 19, remove the stitch marker and join with a Slip Stitch to the first stitch of the round. This brings you back to working in closed rounds for the final edge.

Decorative Picot Edge

Sun Hat Pattern

Create a delicate finishing edge by repeating the following sequence around the brim:

  • Work 2 Sc.
  • Ch 2 (or Ch 3 if you prefer a larger picot).
  • Insert your hook into the last Sc made (into both loops).
  • Yarn over and pull through all loops to create the picot.
  • Skip 1 stitch.

Repeat this sequence all the way around. The pattern fits evenly because each repeat uses 3 stitches.

Join with a Slip Stitch, fasten off, weave in all yarn ends, and trim any excess yarn.
